Week 11/12-11/18 Post 1: Formats

The Forum: It provides a format for speaking and listening to a larger audience.

The Panel: It is a public format in which a group of four to eight experts discusses a problem or decision in front of an audience.

The Colloquium: It is a form of public discussion in which a group of three to six experts, usually chosen for their divergent views, discusses a problem, following the problem-solving format, in front of an audience with a moderator facilitating their interaction.

The Symposium: It provides a format for a series of two to six brief speeches made on different aspects of a complex and difficult problem.

Out of all these formats for group presentations I prefer the forum format. I believe that speaking and listening are two essential components to group meetings. Having the option for everyone, the audience and speakers, to participate in a discussion is wonderful. It stirs up thoughts and ideas to brainstorm more possible solutions for whatever the task is at hand.

  1. Hey!

I enjoyed your post! You gave really well though out and clear definitions of the different discussion formats, and it made them much clearer to understand. I have to agree with you on preferring the forum format for solving and discussing a problem. I like that it is the most low-key and informal, while still accomplishing the task at hand, which is solving whatever issue that is being discussed. As you mentioned, speaking and listening are definitely two very important components to group meetings, and they are not always easily accomplished together. Allowing everyone to have a say creates a lot of possibilities in order to solve the problem. Nice job!

  2. Hi Jinxx21! I really enjoyed reading your discussion. It was very well thought out and you established a great format of how to present the main ideas of your post. You also defined each and every term that was discussed in the question. This gives your audience useful information. In the last paragraph you explained why you prefer the forum format. The key terms you used in the last two sentences gave forum format a more fun connotation. What could have made your paper a bit more lengthy is if you went more into detail about how forum formats help small groups. Other than that, your post was very enjoyable to read! (: -Jasmine
