11/5-11/11 Post 3: Me, Myself and I

A concept from the assigned reading that has not already been discussed that I found interesting was the concept for encouraging creativity. There are four techniques; idea needlers, manipulative verbs, association/metaphors and analogy. Put of these four I am going to focus on idea needlers. As the book states, "These idea needlers offer us the opportunity to use a different perspective, or lens, to view a problem," (170). I found this interesting and useful because in table 10.2 there's a list of all the different questions that stir up creativity. For instance, "What if this were turned inside out? reversed? upside down?" or "Can motion be added to it?" Questions like these almost force people to think differently to come up with the answers for it thus stirring up creativity. I love this technique because at work or at school in either group, once group members start asking the "right questions" (idea needlers) imagination begins to flow and ideas are pouring out left and right. The groups then come up with outrageous, silly, amazing, weird and awesome ideas. No matter which idea is chosen for the given task, the other ones can me stored/remembered and used for later or morph into something else.

  1. Hi Jinxx21, great job with your response. I liked how you titled your blog “me, myself, and I.” I thought it was creative because you discussed the concept of how to encourage creativity. I’m glad you talked about this because I feel that it would be useful for me to try to encourage my creativity. I liked how you talked about the fact that no matter how crazy or silly and idea is, just because you don’t use it doesn’t mean that it can’t be used for something else later on. The whole point is to have a bunch of ideas that you can rummage through when you need a creative solution. Nice work this week!

  2. I am glad you brought up the technique of needlers when it comes to encouraging creativity. Like you mentioned, needlers are both interesting and useful since you are able to generate new perspectives. With my previous internship at an advertising agency, it was really common to use needlers as a way to generate concepts, for instance, flipping scenarios, focusing on the negative rather than the positive and trying to look at the uncommon rather than common. By using needlers, as you have experienced in your previous groups, generates silly to serious to awesome ideas that would not be possible if the technique of needlers were not use to think outside the box.
